Compare eReaders: The Benefits Of The Various Kindles

Note: This a review, click here if you want to visit the Kindle Store.

I travel a lot so my Kindle always goes with me. I save so much time and pain taking it instead of having to pick which bundle of books I want to pack like I used to do. I now have a reference library along with great books to read at all times and places. Amazon.com offers three different types of electronic books or eReaders. This post will help you compare the Kindle eReaders.

The Kindle Wi-Fi has a 6 inch display and is 7.5 ” x 4.8″ x 0.335″ in size. It weighs 8.5 ounces. It holds 3,500 books. The battery life last a month with wireless off and three weeks with wireless on.

Books take only sixty seconds to download with free 3G wireless. It does not, however, have global wireless coverage like the Kindle 3G and Kindle DX. Some users later find out that they must set up their home for wireless and end up upgrading to the Wireless 3G. If you already have a high-speed internet connection and a wireless router set up at home and do not need the extra 3G connection, the Kindle Wi-Fi is all you need. The Kindle 3G on the other hand lets you to download books anytime, anywhere. So remember, if you do not have Wi-Fi set up in your home, the Kindle 3G probably is the better option.

The Kindle 3G also has a six-inch display and is 7.5″ x 4.8″ x 0.335″ in size. It weighs about 8.7 ounces, and is great for traveling around the world. It also holds up to 3,500 books. The battery life last a month with wireless off and ten days with wireless on.

The Kindle 3G (Free 3G + Wi-Fi) is the easiest option for most people. Since there is no wireless setup-you can shop, buy, and read immediately from the box. The built-in free 3G connection uses the same wireless signals as cell phones, but there are no monthly fees or commitments since Amazon pays for the Kindle’s 3G wireless connection. This extra convenience lets you to download books anytime, anywhere, without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. Another important feature is the wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories. This makes the Kindle 3G great for international travelers.

The Kindle DX has a 9.5 inch display and is 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″ in size. It weighs about 18.9 ounces. The battery life last two to three weeks without wireless and seven days with wireless on.

This also as no wireless setup – you can shop, buy, and read immediately out of the box. The built-in free 3G connection is the same as the Kindle 3G. With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, the Kindle DX, as thin as a magazine, is the ultimate travel companion. It holds up to 3,500 books, newspapers, magazines, and documents, so you don’t have to choose which books fit to pack. Take your personal and professional libraries with you wherever you go.

Comparing eReaders – The Pros and Cons

This is a review, if you want to go straight to the Kindle Store, click HERE.

I have to say I’m biased. I have had two Kindle wireless reading devices already. So, I’ll be talking about them first. For a traveler like me, a portable eReader is essential for my sanity. My reason for having one may differ from yours, but I think the following list of pros and cons will be helpful.

The Pros:

  • Speed – Fast Downloading and Navigation
  • Screen Contrast - It reads like a book and not a computer screen, cutting out eye strain. The Kindle 3 is even better. It’s much easier to read in dimmer lighting.
  • Battery Life – For the Kindle, Kindle 3, and Kindle DX the battery life is 3 weeks, 10 days, or 7 days, respectively.
  • Weight – Light weight, though some complain about the weight of the DX version.
  • Text Size Adjustability - For those with eye problems the size of the text can be enlarged.
  • Global Wireless Coverage  - Kindle 3 and Kindle DX

The Cons:

  • Slow To Wake Up – There have been some complaints with the Kindle 3 in getting it to wake up. I’ve  noticed that occasionally, but it doesn’t bother me.
  • Freezes – The common complaint of some users is that it freezes. Most don’t seem to have this problem. I never have.
  • Library Books - Does not support library rentals.
  • Wi-Fi Only – Some customers have had to upgrade their $139 WiFi only models because they did not understand that to use ‘wireless WiFi’ in the home they had to set up a WiFi network in their home if they don’t have the 3G cellular wireless feature (which all previous Kindles had before).

I have had no problems with my two eReaders and see no reason to change. Consumer Reports, besides ranking the Kindle as the best wireless reading device, also reports that Kindle users have the highest customer satisfaction scores.

Kindle Wireless Reading Device Features

If you’re going to travel a lot like me, you’ll need the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi or the Kindle DX for global wireless coverage. Of course you could always download the books before you take off on your adventure. For those of you who don’t plan on going anywhere. I still think the Kindle Wi-Fi is all you need. Kindle DX is great for those who read textbooks, newspapers, need to do more research.

Vagabonding with an eReader

Note: Click HERE if you want to go straight to The Kindle Store.

They say the journey is more important than the destination. That may be true, but I hate traveling. Maybe when I get to the point of going first class I’ll feel differently. Instead I travel long-term. I don’t go on two or three-week vacations. I live, make friends and get to know the place over a longer time span, such as several months, even a year like I did in Thailand. I don’t really like being a tourist. Instead, I want to know the place, the people, and the culture.

Certain things are a necessity, however. First and foremost is my portable library on my Kindle wireless reading device. It’s impossible to lug around my library. For any traveler, whether that may be a business traveler, a tourist or a vagabond like me, an electronic book saves time, money, and stress. For years I loaded up my luggage with books I thought I might want to read on my journeys. Now? I just download the eBooks I need or want from the Amazon.com Kindle eBook Store. They’re cheaper and a whole lot easier to pack.

Even if you don’t travel, Kindle books are cheaper to buy. In the end, the savings will quickly pay for your eReader. I will post more on the differences later on, but you can check them out now by clicking: HERE .
